I’ll be glad to welcome the saturated hues of summer. But, for now, I’m going to play with the color and light of the prairie palette.

05.31.13 inspiration

One of the highlights of our trip to Omaha in April was discovering artist Vera Mercer. We stopped at The Boiler Room, a very cool restaurant in the Market District; I was instantly awed by the wall-sized still lifes. When I asked about the artwork, the manager encouraged me to take a full collection of the restaurant’s business cards, each one featuring a different Mercer photograph (the source of this collage).

Everything about the experience was inspiring – from the architecture and design of the subterranean bar to the delicious food and wine and the spellbinding art. All I can say is, seeing those photographs felt significant.

Che Guevara, Andy Kaufman, Andre the Giant.  Sundry elements united by a frame and a spill of red paint. Definitely open to interpretation… I’ve always been a sucker for mixed media.

I was drawn to this shop window full of Indian elephants, tapestries and figurines. I kept zooming in until color, pattern, and texture became the only subjects.

I rounded the corner in the skyway and encountered this disembodied head behind glass. One quick snap and he was gone.

Another idea I like (see 12/365, Almost Abstract), is that of “found collage”. This picture, taken through glass inside Target Center, is a layering of the poster and the transposed reflections from lightboxes and advertisements in the skyway.
