279/365: rocco with camping gear

blog101015_rocco with gear

Rocco was parked by the growing pile of gear the night before our annual camping trip to Crex Meadows. He clearly knew something was afoot and, whatever it was, he wanted IN.

249/365: rocco in motion

blog091015_rocco-turns-one

Wednesday was Rocco’s 1st birthday! so we squeezed in a quick trip to the off-leash dog park to celebrate. We are blessed with a cadillac of a park nearby – huge and forested with hiking, swimming, and plenty of running for our pony of a pup.

While he has been a challenge at home, he is universally good-natured at the dog park: he loves everybody. Rocco’s favorite thing is finding another dog to chase him. My favorite part is the way the terrain brings out the mountain dog in him. He’s genetically predisposed to navigate the steep, rocky hills with ease.

It is a happy place for him. And it’s contagious.

fair warning

The horse shows – specifically the draft horse team competitions – are easily my top entertainment at the Minnesota State Fair. But it’s possible I love the behind-the-scenes part as much as the show itself.

I always wish I was a horse person, moving with familiar ease among the gentle giants. Braiding their manes with ribbons or just standing close enough to feel their awesome power and catch a good whiff of horse scent mingled with leather.

I always wish I was a horse person.

hey, beautiful

226/365: monarch in the prairie garden

blog081815_monarch

I could tell from the tattered wings that it’s been a tough journey. What a relief it must be to come upon a native plant feast like my neighborhood prairie garden!

It is SO good to see each and every monarch this year. Wishing them safe travels and plenty of flowers along the way.

dispatch from up north

Since I have a lot of catching up to do, I decided to break with form and put all my daily photos from our week at the lake into a single post (mainly to spare my email subscribers a total barrage of Terra).

We had a great time, as always. Memories were made, wildlife witnessed, great food consumed. Cold beer, boat rides, fishing, a grand parade. It was pretty much everything you could want from a week at the cabin (except, maybe, another week).
