245/365: sawyer, minnehaha creek

blog090615_Sawyer-in-the-creek

The whole family went swimming in the creek the other day – even Rocco. It’s always a great place to snap pictures: the black water makes a dramatic backdrop and my subjects are so busy having fun that they forget all about the camera.

dispatch from up north

Since I have a lot of catching up to do, I decided to break with form and put all my daily photos from our week at the lake into a single post (mainly to spare my email subscribers a total barrage of Terra).

We had a great time, as always. Memories were made, wildlife witnessed, great food consumed. Cold beer, boat rides, fishing, a grand parade. It was pretty much everything you could want from a week at the cabin (except, maybe, another week).

two-fer mother’s day

I snapped a few shots of Sawyer & Zola yesterday while they were running around by the creek. It’s how I like to see them best – in nature, being happy & free, fully alive & taking it all in. I love the dim reflections in the creek behind them and the play of sunlight on their skin. Mostly I just love them.

Happy Mother’s Day!

weird science

Action-packed family field trip yesterday via the new green line train to St. Paul. We visited the Science Museum of Minnesota, had lunch, and explored our twin city, all in honor of Sawyer’s 11th birthday. From pre-history to the farthest reaches of space and back to Minneapolis, all in one day. What a ride! What a kid!

07.06.13 the scoop

I’ve been taking the same picture of Sawyer scooping tadpoles at the sandpit, reflected in the pond, every year since he was three. This time, his great-uncle Barry joined in on the fun. There is a Norman Rockwell kind of nostalgia and timelessness to this image that always makes me smile.

06.29.13 yeehaw!

We’re back! We spent 10 days at the cabin. I took 975 photographs. Now to get caught up here on the blog…

Before we headed north, we were invited to visit Sawyer’s fort-building camp at Wood Lake Nature Center. We checked out the forts, ate scat cookies and got a live zipline demo!

06.03.13 roll with it

There is all kinds of wisdom to be gathered by watching children.

  • Make your own fun.
  • Play is a priority.
  • It’s OK to get a little dizzy as long as you have a good ride.
  • Who cares about getting dirty??

And, of course,

  • just roll with it.

I have so much to learn.
